Hemorrhoid Surgery: Rubber band Ligation

Rubber band ligation is a procedure applied to bleeding hemorrhoids. This process involves placing a rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid inside the rectum. The band cuts off circulation of blood in the area and causes the hemorrhoid to wither away within a number of days.

This non – traumatic hemorrhoid treatment may take more than one session and you can stay as an out-patient. After procedure, you may feel the pain and as if you need to have a bowel movement. Bleeding may occur 7 to 10 days after surgery, when the hemorrhoid falls off. Using this procedure under general anesthesia, doctors may treat several hemorrhoids but commonly treatment is limited to 1 to 2 hemorrhoids at a time and additional areas may be treated at 4 to 6 weeks interval.

Most people with hemorrhoids don't need a surgery but when severe cases happen, surgery is needed. Rubber band ligation is commonly used treatment for internal hemorrhoids. But it can't be used if there is not enough tissue to pull into the banding device.

This is how the process works:
First, your physician places a rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid causing the blood circulation on that part will totally stop and the hemorrhoid falls off within a few days. This process is also known as rubber band ligation, used to remove the enlarged and bulging hemorrhoids in the rectum an in the anus area.

After the procedure, recovery can last for a number of days but your hemorrhoids will eventually disappear forever. It is common to feel some pain for a few days but you can manage that with a pain reliever. You could also bleed for up to two weeks but taking several sitz baths a days can provide relief from the pain and it will keep the affected area clean. You may also apply creams as suggested by your physician.

Hemorrhoid banding can be a permanent solution for hemorrhoids but it may not work for everyone. Other situations may require surgery so it's better to consult a physician for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
